5 Tips to Prevent Dehydration During Summer

#1: Drink 12-15 glasses of water daily

However, the cardinal rule remains the same – try not to let yourself feel parched during the summer months.

#2: Avoid eating spicy foods
Did you know, spicy foods are responsible for increasing acidity and heart burn? They increase your internal body temperature, that could cause a loss in your body fluids. Instead of consuming fried, spicy food items, switch to cool salads, raw fruits, and nuts to maintain your body temperature.

#3: Consume foods rich in potassium
Scientifically speaking, potassium is responsible for replenishing electrolytes in your body. Electrolytes form electrically charged particles or ions in body fluids that carry the electrical energy for main bodily functions such as muscle contractions and nerve impulse transmission.
As you sweat and feel dehydrated, your body loses essential electrolytes that you need to constantly restock on. Therefore, include loads of bananas, pineapples, mangoes, and sweet potatoes in your daily diet.

#4: Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol
Smoking creates a dry sensation in the throat, which leads to dehydration of the cells. Alcohol, on the other hand, directly affects your liver cells, which can cause severe dehydration. There is no alternative to it; if you’re a heavy smoker and consumer of alcohol, reduce it as much as you can, especially during summer time.

#5: Stay indoors as much as possible
Staying under the sun for hours not just adversely impacts your skin through tanning and premature ageing, but also makes you sweat more. The result? You lose essential fluids from your body, which results in dehydration quicker than usual. Avoid stepping out during peak timings (11 am – 4 pm), and if you absolutely have to, carry a water bottle and a scarf to prevent your body from sun exposure.
